Since 1890, THE Ohio State Buckeyes have built themselves into a pillar in college football history. The program has won 7 National Championships, and the program is nothing short of elite. Saturdays at “The Shoe”, are drenched in tradition. The scene can be described as a Scarlet and Gray ZOO, as 100,000 people pack into Ohio Stadium, and the Buckeye Battle Cry is hollered by the masses. The fans are so loud, that in 1985, Iowa Head Coach, Hayden Fry, actually suggested that there be a rule to gauge noise level. Iowa quarterback, Chuck Long had actually been so rattled by the noise that he was unable to communicate or call plays, and Coach Fry even went so far as to say he was “mentally disturbed” by the noise.
Since their induction into Football in 1890, The Buckeyes have been a perennial powerhouse. With 40 Bowl appearances, 7 National Championships, and have appeared in 13 Rose Bowl games, with 6 of those resulting in wins. Ohio State also has an impressive list of former Athletes to play for them, including Two Time Heisman winner, Archie Griffin. In 2001, the University hired Jim Tressel to be the new coach of the program, and since his arrival, the Buckeyes have appeared in 6 BCS Bowls, and Tressel’s winning percentage has been 82.4 percent, which is the second best in OSU history.
