The Nebraska Cornhuskers played their first season in 1890, since then the program has transformed into a powerhouse program and a staple of the Big 12.  The Cornhuskers have used their option style to produce a hard nose image, and the style can most fittingly be described as a 3 yards and a cloud of dirt.  The power I , and wishbone formations have won championships for this program, but with developing defenses, and the direction of new coach Bo Pelini, a more “west coast” style offense should take form.  The Cornhuskers have been referred to as many names during their time.  They have been nicknamed the “bugeaters”, “tree planters”, “Nebraskans”, “Rattlesnake Boys”, “Antelopes”, “Old Gold Knights”, and “Cornhuskers”.

In the 70’s, The Cornhuskers were the top team in the nation year in and year out, and a brutal rivalry developed between NU and OU.  Both teams ran the option, and NU coach Tom Osborne and OU coach, Barry Switzer developed a friendly rivalry.  Osborne would become the legend of Nebraska coaching, and coached at Nebraska for 24 years.  During the duration of their program, Nebraska has won a total of 5 national championships and 46 conference championships.  In 2008, Bo Pelini was selected to coach Nebraska.  In his first year he went 8-4 and took the ‘Huskers to a Gator bowl appearance and victory against Clemson.

Husker tradition is rich and deep as most truly successful college football programs are.  Game days in Lincoln bring in a mixed crowd of farm boys, and city kids, all there to cheer on the Huskers.  The Pride of Nebraska Marching Band leads the crowd, along with Herbie Husker and Lil’ Red.  Fans pack the 81,000 seat Memorial stadium and stand as “Hail Varsity” and “There is no place like Nebraska.”  The 2009 season looks to start with a bang, as Nebraska looks to be a potential contender in the North.  With good leadership on the field, and the coaching of Pelini, look for this program to turn around.
